Past Progressive (Continuous) Tense

The affirmative past continuous tense:

The past continuous tense consists of:

The subject + was/ were + infinitive + (-ing).

For example:

I was going to the club.

He was going to the club.

They were going to the club.

 

The negative present continuous tense:

the negative form consists of:

 The subject + were/ was + not + the infinitive+ (-ing)

For example:

I was not going to the club.

He was not going to the club.

They were not going to the club.

 

The interrogative present continuous tense:

How to make questions using the present continuous tense:

Was/were + the subject (noun/ pronoun) + the infinitive+ (-ing)…?

For example:

Question: Was she standing in the line?

Answer: Yes, she was / No, she was not.

Question: Were the students playing?

Answer: Yes, they were / No, they were not.

 

When to use the past continuous tense:

We use the past continuous tense when we want to express an action that lasted for a certain time in the past.
