Android Oreo

Being the eight major releases of the Android mobile operating system, Android Oreo was also termed as Android 8.0. And as the 15th version, Android Oreo has Android O as a codename during the development. In March 2017, the alpha quality of Android O was released for developer preview. On August 21, 2017, it was released for the public. Several new features like the support for video, picture-in-picture, notification grouping, performance improvements, and battery usage optimization, and support for auto-fillers, Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi Aware, system-level integration with VoIP apps and two major platform features, was provided by the Android Oreo version. Features like picture-in-picture support, support for Unicode 10.0 emoji (5.0), restructured settings, adaptive icons, notification channels, notification dots, 2 times faster boot time, Google Play Protect, Integrated printing support, Neural network API, shared memory API, Android Oreo Go Edition, autofill framework, automatic light, and dark themes, were also included in the Android version 8.0.

 

Android Oreo History:

Internally, on March 21, 2017, Android Oreo was codenamed as “Oatmeal Cookie”. The first developer preview of Android “O”, released by Google was available for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, and Pixel C. On May 17, 2017, the second studied beta-quality was released by Google. On June 8, 2017, the third developer preview was released. It was offered as the final version of the API. On July 24, 2017, the fourth developer preview was released. It included the latest bugs fixes and the final system behaviors. Finally, on August 21, 2017, Android “O” was officially released with the name “Oreo”.

 

Android Oreo Features:

Several new features were introduced in Android Oreo including:

  • Integrated supports for “picture-to-picture” modes; Supported in the YouTube app for YouTube premium subscribers.
  • Incoming notifications can be snoozed; Batched into topic-based groups known as “channels”.
  • Performance improvement for Android Runtime (ART) features.
  • Specifications of the “adaptive icons” for different shapes by apps; Specified by themes, such as squares, circles, and squircles.
  • Provided a new emoji; Included in the Unicode 10 standard.
  • Introduction of a new automatic repair system; Known as “Rescue Party”; The mobile operating system automatically performs a series of repair steps, if it catches that core system components are continually crashing during startup.
  • Re-brands restarts the “Google Play Store” automatic scanning and sideloads the “Google Play Protect” apps; Gives the “Find My Device” or Android Device Manager, higher prominence in the Security menu of the Settings app, simultaneously.

 

The statistics:

The statistics recorded in September 2019 show that 27.04% of Android devices run Oreo. 10.47% of these devices are on the Android 8.0 version i.e., API 26. The rest of the devices were on the Android 8.1 version i.e., API 27.

 

Oreo in Samsung:

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and S8 are mostly available around the world. These devices are updated to the Android Oreo version, along with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Along with these, many versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Galaxy s7 are also now updated to the Android Oreo version.

 

Oreo in Nokia:

The Nokia 6, Nokia 6.1, Nokia 5, Nokia 3, and Nokia 8 all are updated to the Android Oreo version, some of which are in the Android 8.1 version.

 

Oreo in HTC:

The HTC U11 is now updated to the Android Oreo version. The HTC 10 versions like Verizon, Sprint, are also updated to the Android Oreo version.

 

Oreo in OnePlus:

The OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus T5, and OnePlus 5 are now updated to the Android Oreo version. Along with these devices, the new OnePlus 6 is also launched with Android Oreo by OnePlus.
