NACO:- National AIDS Control Organization
NACO stands for National AIDS Control Organization. It was established in 1922 as the nodal organization for formulation and implementation of policies and programs for prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in India. It provides leadership to HIV/AIDS control programmes in India through 35 HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Societies. It has its headquarters in New Delhi and is a division of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It approved the TeachAIDS curriculum for use in India in 2010, which is an innovation that showed for the first time that HIV/AIDS education can be provided without coupling it with sex education. In 2012 NACO collaborated with 16 other organizations working on HIV/AIDS to run the event ‘Hijra Habba’ under the programme ‘Pehchan’. More than 100 representatives from the Transgender and Hijra community from other states were present at the event, interacting with members of NGOs and civil society. It is an inevitable organization and is given much importance to, owing to the fact that as of 2011, 2.08 million people were infected with HIV.
